I have the very very good fortune of being able to attend the Sasquatch festival this weekend. Needless to say I am super pumped. If you haven’t seen it yet already I made a post about the bands I’m most looking forward to seeing.
I’m pretty much ready to go, I have a flat of water, some macazoni, Wet Wipes (as recommended by Pol), and a whole stack of zone stickers I will be using as I see fit, they will probably be everywhere.
Sick Stack of Stickers.
So this is what I want to see happen, if any zoners who are at Sasquatch see a sticker I want them to take a photo of it and then tweet it or facebook it at us, either from the festival or when you get home and upload all your photos. Cool? Cool. I’m not going to make this easy, I’m going to be getting creative with my placement. Stay on the look out.
The Pack A.D. head out to France today for performances on the 26th 27th and 28th. To go along with their France adventure they have released their tracks Sirens and Seasick in french! Seriously, check it out;
Previous band of the month Rococode has a CD titled; Guns, Sex and Glory, it was released February 7th but they are celebrating the release here in Victoria on April 6th. Go figure, I’m not complaining though. The first time I saw this band was December 2nd at Lucky Bar and I know it was a good show because when I woke up the next morning this was on my fridge :
It's still there too
If you missed out on that show and need a little refresher on who this band is the song Empire might ring a few bells for you. Check out the music video for that one:
You can also hear the whole Guns, Sex and Glory album here.
Opening for Rococode is another band I’m excited to see, The Archers. I saw them performat Big Fernwooda while back and was just recently reminded of them by Behind City Lines,a web-based entertainment show focusing on arts culture in Victoria. Check out their feature on The Archers:
I’m still relatively new to the station. I’ve been here for about 5 months and in that time something came very clear to me; majority of my co workers watch The Walking Dead. I never had any intention of watching this show prior to starting work, but I figured it would be a good way to find some common ground, you know? Have a way in to the conversations around the office. This all despite my huge fear of the zombie apocalypse. I explained my plan to Pol one day, his response was that everyone would like me regardless, I didn’t have to watch the show. Part of me knows this, everyone that works at the zone is super nice, but for safe measure, I decided to watch.
It took me about 3 to 4 days to catch myself up completely. Watching every single episode of walking dead has ultimately changed my life in these ways;
1. Any time I enter a room or building I start planning an escape route. This being figuring out the best way to escape in case of the zombie apocalypse. This or a good place to barricade myself or figuring out what in the room could be used as a potential weapon. Admittedly this seems crazy, but it’s also kind of a fun game. Next time your sitting somewhere and you feel bored start planning your zombie apocalypse escape route. Fun.
2. I have literally had the thought of “would this be what I would want to be wearing during the zombie apocalypse” while getting dressed in the morning. This then also becomes “if I became a zombie how would these clothes wear over time.” I’m not proud of either of those thoughts.
3. I live in an apartment building and my neighbour is an older man with a constant cough. Prior to watching the walking dead, his guttural hacks were just gross, now I hear them as potential Zombie noises and it is the worst.
4. I have taken into serious consideration my physical endurance. This is not to say I’m completely out of shape, but I do know that in the case of zombie apocalypse I might not have what it takes to survive. i.e. running long distances. Maybe I will get this to help me out with that…
5. I’m sad that I have to wait until the fall to see more.
I saw the Hunger games last night and I can’t stop thinking about what I would do if I was chosen for the games. Granted, it’s a fictional story, so the chances of me ever being forced to battle to the death with 23 other people is pretty slim. This is a huge relief.
None the less, that what if? factor keeps entering my brain thoughts. I do not have the stamina and physique in order to win such a game, nor do I have the ability to ever feel comfortable murdering someone (most people see this as a strength). My ultimate strategy would be to hide and hope for the best, let everyone else do the majority of the killing. I feel stressed just thinking about it, it’s like when I think about what I would do if there was a zombie apocalypse. I just know it wouldn’t pan out well for me.
That’s enough of me sounding weak and pathetic, let’s move on. I never read the books so I was amazed to see how many people were there for opening night. This book has a cult following similar to Twilight and Harry Potter, though the fans that I talked to assured me that there is no comparison between the three. One even went as far to say; “That’s like comparing apples to steak.”
So, with anything that has a following like this, memes are sure to follow, and now that I have seen the movie I can laugh at the memes! yay! Here are some of my personal favorites;
Ok, so not really “old people” more so “old timers,” that seems a little more delicately put.
It’s the Old Timers hockey challenge tonight at the Save On Food Memorial Centre, which is a night where some legendary hockey heroes will be taking on the greater Victoria firefighters.
Who will win!?
This Oldtimers team has got a pretty impressive lineup; including Hall of Famers Glenn Anderson and Bryan Trottier with Theoren Fleury, Laurie Boschman, Bernie Nicholls, Trevor Kidd, Ron Duguay, Marty McSorley, Dave Ellett and Gary Leeman.
Now rumor has it this event is essentially the globetrotters of hockey, lots of fun to be had and all for a good cause. A portion of the proceeds from each ticket sold go to Victoria Mustard Seed. So come check it out tickets are $25, the doors open at 6:00pm and game starts at 7:00 pm. I will be there taking in the action, and I have some free passes for the first 10 people who come find me outside the arena before doors. ALSO! I will have new lanyards! Red ones!
Even if you didn’t know James (Jamer) Lindsay, I would say this event is still worth checking out, especially if you’re in to supporting the local skateboarding scene.
Now I didn’t know James, but from what I gather, he was a talented Skateboarder and equally talanted Tattoo and Graffiti artist. 38 years old is way to young to die and it is evident he is sorely missed by many here in Victoria.
Besides being a night to remember James, this is also a fundraiser. The funds raised are for building an addition to the Vic West skate park. This would be a memorial that is both skate-able and artistic. And in my opinion, an all around awesome idea.
The auction sounds like it’s going to be insane! So many donations have come in from different business some of them being; Government st Tattoo, lifestyles market, sitka, 222 skate shop, coastline, the tapa bar, the noodle box, pair o dice, market on yates and many more. For a full list check out the facebook event page.
And of course, no event is complete with out some music which will be supplied by Rennie ‘DUB-NUT’ Foster & DJ SQUANTOS.
Maybe you have noticed that we have been airing all The Victoria Royals home and away games. It’s been a cool experience, I have learned way more then I ever thought I would about sports broadcasting and hockey. I’ve worked the home games setting up the equipment that help make Marlon Martens and Mike Walker sound so good. It’s crazy how much goes on behind the scenes so I made a video to show just that; Check it out!
The next Victoria Royals game is against the Everett Silvertips tune in to the zone on March 7th at 7pm to hear that game.
A Morgan Page video came out yesterday featuring Canadian sisters and zone artists Tegan and Sara. It’s called Body Work and it’s a little different then what these 2 usually do. I’m not sure how I feel about it, but the dancey part of me kind of digs it. In most of their recent interviews I have read the two repeatedly mention there drive to change their sound with each album to reach out and find new fans, cool! So check out the video and see what you think!
See what I’m saying? pretty different? kind of neat-o though? yeah?
Anyway, this isn’t the only collaborating this duo has done check out some of these other artists that have gotten together to create music/music videos with tegan and sara, or just tegan, or just sara.
Against Me!; Featuring Tegan Quin – Borne on the FM Waves of the Heart
There is actually a pretty slick music video for this, but youtube rules say I can’t embed it here. booo!
The Reason; Featuring Sara Quin – We’re So Beyond This
Contrasting in black and white! So artsy!
DJ Tiesto; Featuring Tegan and Sara Quin – Feel It in My Bones
Fun Fact!: Did you know that Tegan and Sara actually performed with DJ Tiesto during the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in 2008. Tegan and Sara appeared as guests, providing live vocals for Tiësto’s remix of “Back in Your Head”
Theophilus London; Featuring Sara Quin – Why Even Try
There is a music video to this, but Sara isn’t in it, so check out them perform live on Letterman!
Astronautalis; Featuring Tegan Quin – Contrails
Soooooo much swag!
Margaret Cho; Featuring Tegan and Sara Quin – Intervention
Alright, we will end on a funny note. Probably one of the highlights from Tegan and Sara’s career; writing a song dedicated to Margret Cho’s intervention, D’aweee.
Now you tell me, whats your favorite artist collaboration?
The Oscars are tomorrow night which is exciting times for movie critics and cinema aficionado, which I am not.
None the less, I was inspired to watch all the movies nominated for best picture so that I could write a post making a prediction as to who I think will win! It wasn’t easy, but I managed to watch every single film, now maybe you haven’t seen them all so I will give you a quick run through of the nominees and my take on the movie, sounds like fun, Yeah?
1. The Artist
Alright, so when I heard that an all silent film was nominated I was all like “whaaaaat?” Then assumed it would be boring and artsy and ultimately lame BUT, it surprised me, it was awesome. Hugely entertaining for a movie with no natural sound, it was a completely different way to watch a movie. It also contained almost every 1920′s silent film stereotype you could think of. One slick stylistic movie.
2. The Descendants
That trailer literally is the whole movie. Not a whole lot else happens in The Descendants or as I like to call it “The unfortunate situation that keeps getting more unfortunate, but life is hard anyway so deal with it.” On the plus side, George Clooney has the most soothing voice on the planet, so rough yet so soft, mmmm.
3. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
Based off a book I didn’t bother reading. This movie was pretty intense, following a kid running around New York as he tries to figure out more about a key he found in his dads closet. I’m still not sure if he ever really came to a solid conclusion or anything. I feel that this story was made to ultimately profit off a tragedy, and that makes me feel a little uncomfortable.
4. The Help
This movie was Rad! At one point a woman eats poop! Poop I say! What more could you possibly want? Well, actually that’s kind of disgusting… but none the less, this was definitely one of my favorites, it has the emotional range to make you laugh and to make you cry. (I don’t actually ever cry though because I’m tough as nails.)
5. Hugo
Another movie about a boy who lost their father in a tragedy! Only instead of having a key and trying to find the lock it goes to he has the scariest looking wind up robot boy ever that he’s trying to find the key to. Whoa! This movie features some silent film history as well. Hmm, not so original Hugo…. This movie has also got Borat! Well, Sacha Baron Cohen and the chick from Kick-Ass! Well, Chloë Grace Moretz.
6. Midnight in Paris
Ok, right off the bat, I do not like Woody Allen movies. Usually. This one however, I dig. Is it Oscar worthy though? Probably not, but if your into movies where characters somehow travel back in time and get to hang with all the great artists of the day, then it’s worth the watch.
7. Moneyball
Money, sport, math and Brad Pitt. The trailer makes the movie look a lot cooler then it actually was. That’s not saying it was awful, it was pretty entertaining for a movie I would never normally want to see.
8. The Tree of Life
I have never been more angry after watching a movie. This was the definition of pretentious.
pre·ten·tious
Adjective: Attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture than is actually possessed.
I watched 30 minutes of nebulas and space clouds, I saw Sean Penn wander through a desert and go through a random door frame that was just chillen, at one point there were dinosaurs, and all the dialogue and narration was whispered. So mad. If this wins the Oscar this is how I will feel.
9. War Horse
Of all the movies, this was the one I was least looking forward to watching. Just the title “War Horse” make me not want to watch it. I don’t like movies about war and I really can’t stand movies about horses. This was 2 hours of full grown men getting misty eyed over a horse, with war footage in between to spice things up, so I guess it delivers what the title promises. War and Horses.
Those are the nominees and now for my prediction of who I think will win. Oh boy! My opinion is so exciting! :P
Who I think will win: The Artist.
Now you tell me, who do you think will win this year?
